I sent this text to Ectaco not realizing that there is a special forum for the jetbook:
Hello,
My Jetbook contains the following directories after I downloaded an Adobe Digital Editions ePub book title:
- Annotations
- Thumbnails
They are subdirectories of "Digital Editions"
As this was just for testing purposes (to see if the Jetbook was recognised by Adobe Digital Editions - and it was) I removed the ePub title again but these two directories are still there.
I wanted to delete these directories (which must be referring to the book title originally installed) manually but got an error message. In fact, the Annotations directory cannot even be opened and the Thumbnails directory contains strange files such us :title>A.dob and /> >/de:,met
I must have messed up someting. How do I get rid of these two directories to make a fresh start with my jetbook? I could not find anything in the manual.
Otherwise, I like the Jetbook a lot and I want to start building up a library now. Before doing so I should like to have a "clean" Jetbook again.
PS I have firmware version 0.35.
After sending this mail I read and followed an advice found elsewhere on the internet and reformatted the internal drive (FAT under Windows 7). The directories have gone, ready for a fresh start - I thought. Although the original structure is there (Books/Audio Books/Pictures/Settings) Adobe Digital Editions cannot copy ePub books to the Jetbook. ADE give an error message: "file cannot be copied". ePub books without DRM and without using ADE can be copied and read without any problem. Seems I have been messing around here. As most books are DRM protected I have a serious problem. So, what can I do now? Is there a way to set the Jetbook back to factory settings ?
Many thanks.

The fresh start would be after redoing the (0.35m?) update that gave you the ADE files and folders that you removed.
When looking at the internal memory using the USB cable and Windows Explorer you will see folders and files
that you do not see when looking at the internal memory with the jetBook's own "manager". Among the
folders in the internal memory will be ".adobe-digital-editions" (a hidden folder in Linux) with the "device.xml"
file that tells the ADE program, on your PC, that your jetBook is a device that can be authorized. The update
will place this folder onto your jetBook.
The ADE program on your PC may see that folder back on your jetBook, after redoing the update, and rebuild
the "Digital Editions" folder and it's sub folders for the books you have in the library entry for the device. Or
you may have to have ADE reauthorize your jetBook.
There is a way to "Restore Factory Defaults" using the built in Diagnostic screen, but there should not be any
need for that, yet.
Luck;
Ken
P.S.; It is a good Idea to copy your jetBook's internal memory to a folder on your PC, after the update, so
that you will have the ability to restore your internal memory to that state, should you need to at a later
date.

Dear Ken,
Many thanks for your help! I did exactly as you said and things are back to normal again. I also received an answer from Ectaco saying more or less the same.
One further question: is the Jetbook Lite also Adobe DRM compatible (so, without first having to convert files). In other words, can I buy an ePub book with Adobe DRM and read it on a Jetbook lite? And how about the Jetbook mini?
Most ePub books here in Germany are Adobe DRM protected so this issue is important for me. I would like to buy either the lite or the mini as a present for someone.
Thanks agains.
Greetings from Berlin

Sorry I haven't been available for a while.
The jetBook Lite (JBL) as of the 0.16e firmware can read ebooks that are infected with any of
three DRM scams the ADE (Epub&pdf), the Barn's & Noble (Epub) and the Secure eReader (pdb).
The jetBook Mini only reads .txt or .fb2 ebooks and can handle none of the DRM scams.
Luck;

I don't understand why this annoyance would want to spam a product support forum. It is a relatively small audience and not likely to attract those foolish or gullible enough
to click on the links in such posts. Why don't they try the Apple Forums?

Dear Ken,
I am sorry having to bother you again but it seem that my Jetbook is now completely stuck. For some unknown reason I do not have access to my epub files anymore. It says "no corresponding file(s) found" although my SD card contains some 200 titles. I had a look at settings > system settings > card capacity to find that, much to my surprise, it reads: total: 0,0 KB, free: 0,0 KB. Clearly, the SD card (the same I have been using all the time) is not recognized anymore. I then found out that under "memory capacity" things are also down to 0,0 KB! I tried another SD card with the same result.
I then copied the Data, Firmware and Reflash-Nor onto a fresh SD card and followed the instructions for a firmware update. Result: none. Things are still the same, the Jetbook does not recognize anything. The menu is still there, though.
What am I to do? Do a Factory Reset? I am not sure how to do this. I do not mind starting from scratch as long as I get the Jetbook working again.
Many thanks for any advice you can give.
Regards
Leo

With that SD card that has the three folders in your jetBook (JB);
You can go to the Diagnostics Menu built into the JB, it is here that you can do the
#13 - Reflash NOR and the #7 - restore factory defaults
To enter the diagnostics screen:
Reset the device. (press the button in the hole on the back)
Then hold down three buttons.
They are: "on/off" "zoom" and "menu".
When you see the jetBook screen let go of "on.off".
Keep holding the "zoom" and "menu" keys until you see a 16 item screen.
It's tricky, so it may take a couple of tries.
Then you can reflash the NOR Memory and restore the JB to factory defaults.
After that is done reset the JB.
Now you can update the firmware as you normally would.
Luck;
Ken

Dear Ken,
Many thanks for your prompt reaction. I have done exactly as you said and and the internal memory is now recognized again.
However, SD Cards are still a problem, they simply won't be detected (I have tried two different SD cards).
Furthermore, when I try to do the "Reflash NOR" ( not sure what this means) I get an error message saying "Necessary file(s) are missing, Press Escape to quit"
I also noticed that after having restored to factory defaults I did not have to do a firmware update: the firmware shown was 0.35 already (and not 0.33).
I also tried the SD Card test (no. 4 in the menu) and although it said "SD Card Detected", SD Read/Write/Verify Test Success" the following SD Test program seems to do nothing.
The screen shows "SD Testing in progress ..." forever so I canceled it after 20 minutes or so.
As a result, I can now put some books in internal memory (about 90 MB free) but stil can't use the SD Card.
Any ideas?
Your help is greatly appreciated.
Best wishes
Leo

I do remember this loss of SD card issue, once before, but I can't seem to remember if
or what the fix was. If all else fails you may need to send it to Ectaco by a RMA, you
should be able to contact Ectaco's Tech Support through their site. ( You can click on
the ECTACO text at the bottom of these pages.)
For now, what happens if you first turn on your JB without an SD card in it, then
insert the SD card? Does a little message appear about not removing the card
while the menu updates? (Be sure to use a card with ebooks on it.)
Luck;
Ken

Dear Ken,
Many thanks. I bought yet another SD Card (2 GB), copied some epub files onto it, then switched on the Jetbook before inserting the SD card (just like you told me) - and this time it worked! I haven't the faintest idea why, though. The card is recognized in the settings menu.
On top of this, when I put in the previously used SD cards again they also seem to be OK now. Really strange. There is only one thing: when I tried to copy my 200+ epub files I had an error message after file no. 170 or so. No further files can be copied, although there is still plenty of space left. The SD card is formatted FAT which I believe to be correct for the Jetbook. Now that things are almost back to normal I do not really want to do too much trial and error - or would FAT32 indeed be better?
Thank you for all your time.
Best wishes
Leo

FAT32 is better for a "Library" SD card (one that holds your ebook files in the folder structure
of your choosing) and I have reformatted the internal memory to FAT32 as well. For firmware
updates I still prefer to use the FAT16 (often listed simply as FAT). It is easy enough to move
the contents of an SD card to a folder on my PC, and reformat for use during a firmware update
then format it back to FAT32 and put the folder contents back.
Depending on how you made the file structure, you may need FAT32 to allow for more books.
I have currently 6,483 files in 48 folders @1.65GB on my current "Library" SD card.
But, the hangup at only 170 files is more likely a problem with a file at that point. If you can
isolate the offending file, try running it through the free Calibre program, with the output
profile set to "Jetbook 5-inch".
Luck;
Ken

Dear Ken,
Again, I followed your suggestions and again, it worked wonders! The Calibre thing did the trick and after having reformatted my SD card to FAT32 I am pleased to say that things are now back to normal.
Thank you so much for your help.
