OK, I'm very disappointed.
I've just received my warranty replacement of my JetBook Lite and it is still plagued with the annoying flicker. I'm not going to go through the hassle of trying this again, since I'm betting it'll all be for nothing and I'll end up again with a defective product.
Ectaco, I'm willing to bet that this flicker issue is a common problem with all your JetBook Lite products. A shame, since I would love this e-reader if it weren't for this glitch. I really can't recommend this to anyone, as I've been doing, because of this. Hopefully your other two e-readers aren't experiencing the same issue.

Hi,
Thanks for your question and your patience with everything. I have been told that while the flicker issue is more prevalent it is only seen in less then 1% of all eReaders we sell. That still does not fix your problem though to say the least. It is a weird problem and i don't know the cause 100%. I was told that it was the screen and or the firmware.
Please let me know the following so maybe we can get to the bottom of it.
1) Do you only see it in bright light or all the time?
2) What firmware version do you have? (it should be the newest but lest check just in case).
3) Please let me know what formats you are trying to read. Do you see it in all formats?
4) Please press the button to turn the screen sideways, do you still see it? (in landscape mode).
Hopefully we can get this fixed.

1) Bright light. For example, if I am reading with a desk lamp close by. It's subtle in most cases and not noticeable under most indoor lighting conditions with a ceiling light source. However, the problem can be exacerbated by not viewing the screen head-on. Direct sunlight outdoors makes the flicker so noticeable that it's impossible to read the thing under those circumstances.
2) Latest. 0.16g I believe.
3) I've seen it in all formats I've tried. PDF, TXT and ePUB.
4) Yes, flicker is still present in landscape mode.
I appreciate your reply and trying to help me with this issue though I doubt anything can be done.
The good news is that I can still use the e-reader under most conditions based on my reading habits. Still, very disappointing.

Hi Ethan,
If you can please just double check firmware version. Settings > hardware settings > Firmware version. Please let me know for sure and i will see what can be done about this. Thanks!

Jerry,
talk to your tech people and ask what is the frame rate for the display when in portrait and landscape modes.
If they are using the same rate (I think they are), to check if it really is being upheld.
I am suspicious that the frame rate may be related to the quantity of lines. So when in landscape you have fewer lines, the intended frame rate is fullfiled.
When in portrait you have more line and gets a lower framerate.
Also, in my case, the flickering used to start a few seconds after the page turn. Maybe a lower clock rate is selected to save the batteries when not in use (in use: responding to user commands, turning, pages, etc)
I could see from configuration files that the JBL is never really turned off, only put on suspended state with blanked screen and very low clock rate.
I also found also settings for contrast and frame rate (refresh) that are not used. Maybe the engineers have selected some fixed values that should work for 100% of the devices, but this clearly does not happen.
Maybe a configuration entry, where the user could select contrast and frame rate to a flicker free visualization at the cost of a lower battery life.

Hi,
Ok so 0.16e that is the latest version.
So jorlando i should find if the frame-rate varies in landscape and portrait mode? You are thinking maybe the framerate in a passive mode can be a bit lower causing the flicker?
I wonder why it is always on the left side of the screen (or so i am told). Let me see if they will release the information to me about framerate, i know they are weird sometimes when it comes to this stuff but i will try.

Jerry,
yes, I think that there is something related to the amount of lines. In portrait the height is 640 lines, in landscape is 480 lines. If you have some routine depending on the line count to calculate the frame rate and that routine was made for portrair mode we would have a lower frame rate in portrait.
This is plausible, since the "true" orientation of the screen is landscape (480 lines) and it is rotated to portrait (640 lines)
Napkin math for landscape mode:
480 lines x 60 frames/second = 28800 lines/second
If this value is fixed in portrait we have
28800 lines/second / 640 lines = 45 frames/second
From my late JBL I could perceive the flicker more on the left side, but I think that impression is caused due the left-justified text. We have mor blanks on the right side, so we tend to notice the artifact first on the left side.
In landscape mode I could not perceive the flickering, using the same text that flickered in portrait
Also I believe that the flicker is not due "frequency beating" from flourescent lighting, since I could have flicker under sunlight or incandescent lighting
