My problem is as follows:
It is not possible to insert the batteries into the ER486T. Having removed the battery cover I can insert one battery. It will not slide down into the machine sufficiently far for the second battery to be inserted. When I try to look into the receptacle I think that I can see an obstruction which looks like the battery contact displaced through 90 degrees to the plane in which it should sit. I am also concerned that there is some scratching on the screen which would suggest that this instrument has been carelessly handled before being received by me.

Please try to peel the vinyl tape/protective film off the display.
Please note that ER486T has a spring that is why the batteries have to be inserted with effort.
