What is the explanation for my jbl stating "failed to open the file".

That depends...

What type of file is it?

Does it have any DRM on it? If so what kind?

How large a file is it?

Does the file name include "(" or ")" ?

Does it have a large RGB graphic file for the opening book cover?

It could be a file that is just enough off the specs that the JBL can
deal with, to cause a problem. If so just running it through Calibre
would likely fix it right up.

I've run across a few files that seemed to want to be a problem,
but the JBL has always been able to deal with them after just a
little tweaking. Most files cause no problem at all.

Some files can have long load times if they have complex graphics,
or other structural factors. They can be corrected so that they load
in a normal length of time.
