I have tried to install the Talking Phrasebooks, which I am genuinely interested in. However, whichever device I installed to (WM2003 and 2003SE), it failed to open and displayed the following message:

file not open for read

\Storage Card\Lingvosoft Phrasebook 2006 (English-XXX)\eng.pb3

(tried Eng-Thai, Eng-Viet, Eng-French, Eng-German, Eng-Arabic).

I have searched this forum and tried the 2 suggested methods:
1. Exit PhraseBook using its menu Tools\Exit, not top-right (ok)/(x) button;
2. Soft-reset the Pocket PC after install Phrasebook;
but both are not working.

I have even hard-resetted my Pocket PCs and installed the Phrasebooks in my Pocket PCs' default conditions, but still I get the above stated message whenever I try to open a Phrasebook.

Any other suggestions?

Same "Anonymous" guy here (should have registered myself on this forum).

Anyway, I think I found out the cause of this after some investigation on my own. Apparently, the Talking Phrasebooks themselves MUST BE INSTALLED in the Main Memory although the Sound Databases can be installed separately in the Storage Card. I am not sure if it only happens to me, but I have tested this on a WM2003 as well as a WM2003SE device (both in default hard-resetted conditions). It looks like the Talking Phrasebooks series have not been properly coded to be able to locate the Phrasebooks startup files (eng.pb3) if they are installed in the Storage Card.

If the above is right, what a major flaw it is then for the Lingvosoft Phrasebooks series! Users would have to compromise very valuable memory space in their devices' Main Memory (each Phrasebook at least 2MB to install!). Such space-intensive language software should always be installed in the Storage Card!

Shouldn't the Lingvosoft developers look into this immediately? Being only able to install Lingvosoft products into Main Memory would surely deter me from purchasing, which is a sad thing, especially when the Phrasebooks are such fantastic products!

All Phrasebook series recently have been updated to Version 2.2.48,
please check this update on your device:

(some fixes and improvements implemented)

Hello Max,

Thank you for your reply. The versions I had on were 2.2.48 (I forgot to mention before, my bad!) anyway. I have by now tested ALL of the Eng-XXX Talking Phrasebooks, which totalled about 18 of them (I have tested 18 of the ones I am more interested in; I think I had only omitted the few Eng-Japs and Eng-Chineses). I also re-tested the Eng-French link you just suggested, but to no avail too.

Same conclusion - the Lingvosoft Eng-XXX Talking Phrasebooks would only run in WM2003 and WM2003SE (havent tested on WM5), if the Phrasebooks themselves (sound databases can be installed into Storage Card though) are installed into Main Memory; it doesn't look like the Phrasebooks can run from the Storage Card.

As mentioned, each Phrasebook costs about 2MB+ worth of Storage space in Main Memory, which would be disastrous if an user elects to install a few Lingvosofts in his Pocket PC.

Please advise.

We checked it more and still can't find any problems..
All is perfectly started both from the Main Memory and from the module of additional memory (Storage Card).
Devices HP 1470 (2003 SE) and Dell axim x51v (WM 5.0).

Probably, mistake is related on discrepancy with an actual components arrangement and their references in registry records..
Though we still cant figure out how it can be(

Now we are preparing debug version to check this cause, later I'll post link to this tool so you can run it from your Card and send log file to us.

Hello Max,

Thanks. I'll wait for your tool to run the relevant tests.

Hello!

You can download 'PB-PKPC_debug.zip' from this location and replace "pdglw.exe" in PhraseBook installation folder on your Storage Card with ones in archive:
ftp://81.3.156.146/PB-PKPC_debug.zip

('T' - for talking version, 'NT' for non-talking)

Log file placed in root folder in main memory (\My Device\log.dat).
Plz send it to this e-mail:

Hello Max,

I just tested the pdglw.exe file that your colleague emailed me, it works! I think I am now able to run the Talking Phrasebooks from the Storage Card, I tested with 2 Talking Phrasebooks (Eng-French, Eng-Viet).

Is this pdglw.exe is a generic file for the Talking Phrasebooks? I just have to replace every original pdglw.exe in the installation directories of the various Talking Phrasebooks with this? Thanks.

Hello, Chris!
-)

I'm glad that we resolved this trouble at last!

Yes, pdglw.exe is a common for all Talking Phrasebooks series.
Just replace old with new one and run.

But note, this is still debug version - so it should create and append log file at every startup.
//but its quite small

Thanks for your help!

Hello Max,

You mean to say that this pdglw.exe you emailed me is another debugging tool, which will create log files at every startup?

If that's the case, will you guys be upgrading your Talking Phrasebooks versions to include a properly functioning pdglw.exe soon?

Look - this is a properly functioning pdglw.exe!
Why you have doubt still?..
Its just have function to create log files at every startup,
which is normal for most programs.

Of course, we upgrade Talking Phrasebooks versions on site soon.
