Whenever I plug in the cable to download a book from the folders on "my computer" the interface shows the screen for the main device and my SD card. The entire unit then shuts down in a few seconds before I can download a book. Does anybody have any suggestions?

Hey,

Sorry about the difficulty, please try/let me know the following.

1) Is this a jetBook or a Jetbook Lite?
2) What firmware version do you have? (Settings > System settings > Firmware version)
3) Did you try it on more then one computer?
4) Did you try it with the SD card out of the device?

Let me know so i can better help out.

Jerry, I have the Jetbook Lite with version 0.15. No, I did not try downloading a book with another computer and, no, I did not try it with the SD card out of the unit.

Hey,

Ok, please try the following so we can isolate the problem.

1) Try connecting the device to a PC without the SD card in it. This will eliminate the possibility of the SD card causing a problem.
2) Try connecting the jetBook to another PC, this will eliminate the possibility of the PC causing the problem.
3) Try updating the firmware to version 0.16, you can see the instructions here.

Let me know if any of these steps works and if so which one.

Jerry, before I entered my question on the forum I had asked a friend and he suggested the same remedy you did but added that I should recharge my batteries to full charge. I did that and removed the SD card and everything is working great. I am downloading books with no problem. I think I will wait a while before attempting the firmware update. It sounds a little complicated.

Jerry question regarding the JB-L.

When connected to a PC via a usb cable is the device powered by the USB cable? In my opinion - I think "No" as non re-chargeble batteries could be in the device - but I am not sure.

If it is not powered while connected I can see the need to ensure that fresh batteries are in the device whenever connecting to a PC for data transfer via USB. I have noticed that many devices that have built in Battery life indicators can often be misleading especially if the battery power is marginal to begin with. Low power can result in all kinds of missleading issues on both sides of the connection and could lead to file corruption.

When disconnected there may be sufficient power levels to allow reading a doc.

I have a JB so I don't have that issue. I also tend to use an external card reader/writer unless it involves DRM files.

Just a thought.

I guess the problem may be "The depleted Batteries" residing in the device while connected to the PC.

They appear to interfere with the device's ability to stay powered on while connected. As the Reader does not have a battery charger built in, the power management circuity continues to look at the batteries as a source that does not meet the power requirements and shuts the unit down. The act of connecting the device via USB does not appear to be taking the batteries out of the picture.

The way you explained it (as per the techs) if there are no batteries in the unit - there is no conflict and the unit can continue to receive power from the USB - providing the PC is powered up.

When the batteries are fully charge and the device is connected to a PC via USB the device's power management detects no low power source from the Batteries and continues to keep the unit active even if it may not be using the batteries for power at this stage.

Re-chargeable Batteries have a very
